What is an LEI number?

LEI is the abbreviation for Legal Entity Identification. It is an identification number that legal entities must provide when making a financial transaction. This number makes it easy to provide the partner with the desired data during a financial transaction. A process that is otherwise very lengthy takes only a few minutes when using an LEI.

The LEI number is issued by the GLEIF (Global Entity Identifier Foundation). This organization has been in existence since 2014, operates on a transnational basis and is headquartered in Basel.

All data of LEI number holders is stored in a central database. This is called Global Lei System or GLEIS for short.

How can I apply for an LEI number?

GLEIF is the organization that issues the LEI number. It can be applied for either at so-called LOUs or via registration agents. Simply fill in the required information and submit your application form. After we receive your payment, it will take a maximum of 24 hours for your LEI number to be active. We offer several payment options to make the process as smooth as possible. If you need the LEI number very urgently for a financial transaction, make sure you choose a payment option that will make your payment instantaneous.

The LEI number is valid for one year. After that you can renew the LEI number. It is also possible to sign a contract for several years, then you do not need to worry about renewing your LEI number.
